Comrades, this is for the revolution!

*On Friday, August 21st at 3pm,* we will host our Black August
Commemoration to honor those who have fought and died for our freedom and
to celebrate the strength and fights we are engaged in as we continue to
fight for liberation.

Building from our series of Town Halls, recent successful Freedom Now
celebration and open group discussions at our July Marketplace, we affirmed
that *“We’ve Always Been Here”* through the challenges and obstacles we
faced by organizing and building collective and individual power.
We established that we are continuing to remain here-bigger and bolder than
ever.  We must seize the time before us. August is a strategic time, a
planning time, a time of recommitment.

Black August started in 1979 and is rooted in the Black Panther Party and
the legacy of George Jackson, who was a prominent activist, author, and
member of the Black Panther Party, whose writings and resistance against
oppression have inspired many. He was tragically killed in a prison
uprising in August 1971.

We take this opportunity to ‘bridge the gap’ of commemoration between the
day the first enslaved Africans who stepped onto land in America on August
20, 1619 and the resistance against said slavery the very next day on
August 21st.  Therefore, August 21st is a day of Revolution.
*And to this day we continue to fight for our united liberation!*
Since then our community has continued to resist violence and manipulation
of our narratives such as with the injustices inflicted upon Carlos Ocana,
Charley "Brother Africa" Keunang, and Trishawn Carey. Black August is not
just another day- it is a reminder of why we fight and it is a commitment
to continue to build community power in the strife for our united
liberation.
*So we invite you to stand in power with us this Black August.*
*3:00–3:25 — Remember (Past)*
Ceremonial & political opening; drummers as we establish the cultural
importance of Black August and women’s ever-present influence and impact
throughout our fights for freedom, libations, Black National Anthem, Black
August history and why August 21st matters.

*3:25–5:30 — Remember, Connect, Participate (Present)*
Grounded in the historical acknowledgment of our ancestors’ deep
commitment, hard-fought fights for our rights continued through the years
and still are happening, freedom fighters, testimony, speakers, performers,
committee member moments, food, art, produce, haircuts, open mic, political
education, with the emcee continually connecting it all together. Honor and
be inspired by our ancestors and those who have fought back.

*5:30–6:00 — Commit, Celebrate (Future)*
Recognizing there are freedom fighters in all of us, we turn to our members
to name what we are fighting for now, importance of resisting against the
harm, committee invites, opportunities to build power together, next
actions, final performances.
