No one said the struggle in China after 1949 was simply between ideas. It was a struggle between two camps of people, people of different backgrounds, with different commitments to individual and social material interests, and yes, with different outlooks on how history moves. The point of historical materialism, on which you quote Marx, is not to be an understanding spectator of what happens (like you) but rather to be better at changing what happens.
