Building a Plausible Conspiracy Theory

The most immediate concern of Muslims around the world after 11 September was how to absolve themselves of the accusations pointed at them, arising from the fact that the much publicized horrors were all linked to an Islamic act of terror, masterminded and performed by Muslims, mainly Saudis and Egyptians, who paradoxically benefited from US generosity more than others. One of the ways to do that was to build, as is their wont, a plausible conspiracy theory which can be appended to the well-known world Jewish conspiracy. Therefore, on the morrow of those attacks, 'explanations' started burgeoning throughout the Muslim world, suggesting that Jews stood to 'gain' the most from that attack, and therefore it could arguably be imputed to Jews, Zionists, the Israeli Mossad and so forth, producing as 'proof the assumption that most workers at the Twin Towers who were Jewish absented themselves from work on that day. This theory, which gained wide currency in the Arab and Muslim world, was upheld by the prisoner Yassin, who had been arrested in the United States following the first attempt against the Trade Center in 1993, and then released to go back to his sponsors in Baghdad. In an interview aired on US television in early June 2001, Yassin, who was interviewed in his Iraqi jail, recounted quite candidly and as a matter of course that his gang had first planned to hit the Jewish neighbourhoods of Crown Heights and Williamsburg in Brooklyn, and then shifted their attention to the Twin Towers when they 'realized' that those were 'better' targets.
