U.S. Remains 'Dangerously Vulnerable' to Attack

We will always be "dangerously vulnerable" to attack. That is because we
are an open and free society and the more we safeguard ourselves from an
attack, the more we restrain our freedoms so we must maintain a careful
balance.

It is amazing that we have not experienced another attack [that we know
about] since 911 and at least part of the reason has been fear that we
would strike back because of the example of Iraq. Yes, of course, I know
Iraq had nothing to do with Osama bin Laden, but it was a growing threat
and an antagonist that we could fight because we KNEW where they were at.
Saddam did try to assassinate George Walker Bush and nothing was ever done
about that. Saddam did try to obtain materials which would most certainly
be used against the United States. He hated us and in any other
administration would still be trying to hurt us. It may not have been the
directly connected to Islamic terrorism, but it was a catalyst for state
and non-state terrorism.

Saddam had used gas against its own citizens and it had fired missiles at
Israel. It was a dangerous adversary. For these reasons and others it was
a good thing to change the landscape of Iraq and alter the Middle East so
their fear of George Bush and we hope the next president as well will
serve as a obsticle to an attack on the U.S.
