The death toll in the Allied firebombing of Dresden in 1945 killed
25,000 - far fewer than the 500,000 previously claimed - a special
commission has found. Since the end of the Second World War, scholars
have disagreed on the tally of people killed by waves of British and
U.S. bombers in the east German city. The Nazis in 1945 put the figure
at 200,000, communist authorities claimed it was 35,000 and most
recently neo-Nazis suggested between 500,000 and a million people may
have been killed in a 'bombing holocaust'. But a team of university
professors, military historians and archivists has so far confirmed
18,000 deaths during a four-year research project. They say police and
city administrator records at the time of the bombing stated there were
about 25,000 victims.
