turning one of the powerful hoses back  onto the security forces. 

Egyptian police were attempting to disperse the crowds protesting  against the 
30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak and the country's  grinding poverty in 
the centre of Cairo.
But the crowd fought back.
It was a small victory against the security forces who have also used  rubber 
bullets, batons and tear gas to try to control the protesters.

The unemployment rate rose in 20 states last month as employers in most states 
shed jobs. 

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate rose in 20 states and  fell in 
15. It was unchanged in another 15 states. That's nearly the  same as in 
November, when the rate rose in 21 states, fell in 15 and was  the same in 14.
The report is evidence that the job market is barely improving even  as the 
economy grows. Most economists expect hiring to pick up this  year, although the 
unemployment rate will likely remain high.

Obama cracked a joke about TSA pat-downs – and earned an  immediate rebuke from 
the ACLU.

I also found that remark singularly unfunny, from a man whose family will never 
have to endure such a humiliation.
I guess he was just exuberant at the way the DHS and TSA have managed  to erase 
the 4th Amendment to the Constitution, forbidding unreasonable  search and 
seizure, with their "enhanced examination" of airline  passengers.
He apparently has also had a selective memory problem with Secretary  
Napolitano's vow to have these full body scanners at mass transit  stations, 
sporting events, malls, and hotels.

which manufacture these machines; only the President is  required to put his 
financial resources into a blind trust, after all.

New-home sales in 2010 fall to lowest in 47 years

Here in Hawaii it has become  common to see entire households out on the curb as 
families desperate to  get off this island and unable to pay to move their 
belongings simply  toss it all and leave Hawaii with the clothes on their backs 
and their  few personal treasures. A lot of very expensive and usable items are 
on  those curbs, but it is not against the law to forage among the piles  
because that is seen as stealing from the state's recycling program (and  taking 
away from the retailers who prefer you buy new TV sets rather  than pick up an 
extra from the sidewalk pile). With the disaster that  just hit the Waimanalo 
Gulch landfill, I hope they will reconsider.

Flotilla aid convoy that killed nine  Turkish activists as a "credible and

The new chief of Israel's military spy agency says sanctions against Iran's 
nuclear energy program have not been working.
Israel's military spy agency chief Brigadier General Aviv Kochavi  made the 
comment on Tuesday in his first briefing to parliament's  foreign affairs and 
defense committee since taking up the role in  November, AFP reported. 

Kochavi also expressed disagreement with the US assessment that sanctions have 
been hurting the Islamic Republic. 

He stated that Iran is not working on the production of nuclear  weapons, but 
added that the Islamic Republic could produce bombs within  years — an 
allegation that Tehran has always denied.

Tunisia-Like Riots Are Breaking Out In Egypt

Anti corruption protests in Egypt have turned violent, reminding everyone of 
Tunisia.
PICTURES: More than 90,000 Egyptians agreed on Facebook to turn out  for a "day 
of revolution" to mark Police Day, a national holiday.  Hundreds of thousands 
turned out for the protests around the country.
Then the riots turned violent in Cairo, according to the NYT:
The officers formed a moving cordon around the demonstration and  there were 
scuffles as the officers tried to halt the march by linking  arms and forming 
lines. One woman was injured when the officers pushed  protesters against a wall 
near an on-ramp leading to a bridge over the  River Nile. But the demonstrators 
quickly escaped the cordon and marched  down the riverside Corniche, snarling 
traffic.

Sputnik moment: Barack Obama's State of the Union

There is no question that Barack  Obama is one of the finest orators of our 
time. You hear his voice, and  you want to believe.  But belief is the enemy of 
reason, which is why  Obama urged us all to renew our belief in the government. 

In the main, Obama said an infinite deal of nothing and he said it  very well. 
He hit all the hot-button topics and said what everyone  wanted to hear. Taxes 
will go down. The deficit will go down. We will  invest in future technology. We 
will freeze spending. On and on, Obama  made promises which are, when one thinks 
about it, mutually exclusive.  He cannot possibly keep them all. Based on his 
prior record, he won't  even try for most of them. 

Being ex-NASA, I was amused by Obama's Kennedy-esque attempt to  revive the 
spirit of the race to the Moon, then hijack it into support  for his green 
agenda. I am sorry Barack, but you are no John Kennedy,  and substituting clean 
coal for oil as an energy supply does not capture  the public imagination the 
way travel into space did all those years  ago. Your expressed devotion to 
incubating new technologies mirrors what  I have been saying for years. One 
would almost suspect your speech  writers read this site. And if actions matched 
words I would celebrate  the rebirth of the great adventure. 

But you are, after all, the President that canceled the  replacement space 
shuttle and ended the return to the Moon. If we are to  have a "Sputnik moment" 
it can only happen by hitching rides on other  nations' rockets. America's 
competency in space has failed as badly as  its competency in high finance. 
Challenger and Columbia are but  firecrackers compared to the Hindenburg like 
conflagration of Wall  Street's mortgage-backed securities fraud. 

Many pundits alluded to the fact that tonight's speech kicks off  Obama's 2012 
re-election campaign. I agree. Obama has made a lot of  promises of what he 
plans to do tonight, and I will hold each and every  failure to deliver up to 
public ridicule between now and November 4th,  2012. You talked the talk, Obama. 
You will be a one-term President if  you fail to walk the walk.

With wages failing to keep pace with rising inflation, workers’ take-  home pay
