Hundreds gathered in Manhattan on Saturday to march for world peace.
The United National Anti-War Committee organized peace rallies with dozens
of speakers and demonstrators.
Protesters marched from Union Square to Foley Square, calling for an end to
the wars overseas and an immediate withdrawal of U-S forces from Iraq and
Afghanistan.
"We think that instead of being at war with Iraq or Afghanistan, the United
States should spend its money on social programs and education programs
here at home instead," said Kay Sweeney of the United National Anti-War
Committee.
"A lot of what we're doing is really trying to come together across
movements in support of labor organizing, in support of communities being targeted
right now by U.S. wars," said Kimber Heinz of the War Resisters League.
Protestors also demanded cuts to military spending to fund programs for
jobs, education, health care, housing and the environment.
