My mother, who used to regale me with horror stories about ProgEd beginning
when I was about 8, had taught HS math in Wisconsin in the '20s and tried to
stay current with developments in the '30s. So sometime between 1920 and 1938
she got alarmed, though just how or when I couldn't say. I don't suppose we'll
ever find a real bright line between PreProg and ProgProg, so I guess I'll
settle for your estimate of 70 years. Still way too damn long.

John Winston Bush is almost there, but it's 70 years, not 80!

My K-12 years ended in '32 and there wasn't a sign of 'progressive' education.

We had drills in spelling.  We chanted the multiplication tables.  We
repeated and repeated.  We wrote out Latin conjugation and Declensions,
sang Frère Jacques, and drew well-labelled maps.

My only regret--they _didn't_ teach me to type.
