Kim, were you riding on a restricted access road when the police officer told you to find an alternate route? If not, unless Edmund has adopted rules that disallow bikes to travel on public streets, the officer was out of line. The State of OK treats bicycles as a motor vehicle from what I hear of other riders there. As cyclists we need to actively defend what rights we have to the public roads. I won't get into an argument with a police officer because that is an argument one cannot win. What I will and have done is to calmly explain to the officer that I think he/she is incorrect and try to explain why. If he or she will not hear me out, I tell them I will comply with their instructions but that I would like to have their name and badge number to file a repoert. If that is refused, I remind them that I have been respectful and agreed to follow their instructions. As soon as it is possible I then file a report with time and location and car number if available. So far i'm batting 100 for results.
