The man is correct. And, forget about "one with the bicycle" -- bogus. Fixed is learning to do more with less: example, pacing yourself on the downhill so that you have energy to get up the next rise; forcing yourself to back off against a headwind; keeping calm downhill (backpressure or brakes) so that you don't run away with yourself. Great fun!
