I really don't understand the logic. This 3 speed unit costs more ($319)
than a Shimano Nexus Alfine 8-speed.($289). You are paying more for less. In
fact all you get is no free wheel. To my mind perhaps the greatest appeal of
a fixie is its simplicity. The challenge is to come up with a gearing that
matches your capability in your riding environment. There is some room for
variation if you have horizontal drop outs. You then choose a fixed/fixed
hub with different sprockets. In my case I currently have a 43/16tooth set
up for my ancient legs. Although I admit there are some hills that I avoid,
I have never had to dismount going uphill. I find that going downhill is
more of a challenge and feather the rear brake as required. Having been at
this for several years no, the amazing thing is that provided that I employ
sensible leg/hills management I am less tired at the end of a ride than I
would have been on a geared machine.
