I had no reason yet to try it out with a level tool, but a typical 
compass thrown into a freezer will freeze and could even get damaged 
irreversibly.  Otherwise, I think that the fluid for a bike inclinometer 
needs to be denser than alcohol (I suppose some oil), to provide slow 
relaxation evening out the effects of shaking.

Ahead of my purchase I actually emailed the manufacturer asking about 
the low-temp operation and they responded that it should be fine.  While 
I was skeptical knowing that different people have different concepts of 
what constitutes a low temperature, so far I have encountered no problems.
