Years ago riding in the mountains ( in a car) on vacations I couldn't tell if we were going up a hill or not so I would turn around and look at the road behind us and everytime you could tell it was uphill.

This type of optical illusion is not at all uncommon in mountainous
errain. You would swear that you are going downhill, when in fact you are
oing uphill. An inclinometer is definitely needed in this instance.
