I've mentioned it before, but I love the carbon filter straws that go for $10. A $100 pump is really overkill (in size, weight, and price) for a single person. I only take my pump when there's a group, since it's much larger and heavier than the 1 oz straw which effectively does the same thing. Filters can clean most junk out of water, but ideally you want water from the best sources first, when possible. Fast moving, non-murky, as high elevation as possible, not downstream for any agriculture or industrial, etc. I would never take water from roadside ditches. Does AquaMira tablets kill viruses? I haven't used them, but I hear that's the standard these days for thru-hikers.
