Except for the fact that nearly all backpackers rely on basic carbon filters that are the exact same process, just in a larger size that will last for longer and pump quickly. The straw "only" lasts for 20 gallons which would be several weeks in the backcountry. If carbon filters were risky, you wouldn't see several different brands selling them. I've never had any issue drinking from carbon filters - though personal experience really means little, since I know some that never filter water and have done fine as well.
