If you really want friction, can't you just turn the indexing 
off?

I have two bikes with 9-speed indexing bar end shifters, and one 
with 7 speed.  They all work great.

I recommend a low-normal "rapid rise" rear derailleur to make 
the lever move in the correct direction ..  both levers move up 
for a higher gear.
