I have the option of using either friction or indexed. I tend to be a 
somewhat aggressive rider, so click-and-shift seems to work quite well 
for me. Plus, in awkward situations, I'm not struggling to find an 
appropriate gear. I just count the clicks in the up or down direction I'm 
headed. Seems to be easier in my mind, anyway.
