Re: Bar End Question

I have Rivendell's Silver friction shifters on my touring bike and Shimano
bar cons, which can be used either way, on a Bike Friday.  The Silver
shifters have longer arms and work a lot smoother than the Shimanos.  Using
the Shimanos in friction mode is a bit of a PITA as the levers are so short
and I tend to use them in indexed mode.  It's a joy to use the Silver
shifters and I seem to just use the heel of my hand to downshift and only
need to pull up gently to upshift.

BTW, to upshift, I just stop moving the pedals and pull on the lever until I
feel pressure and then start pedaling and the chain moves the one cog.  I
hit the shift every time.  Down shifting is a bit different but I'm used to
where the lever ought to be to be in the right gear.  I rarely move the
chain more than a couple or three cogs, but it's easy to go from the
smallest to the largest in a nano second if I need to.
