Shimano barcons work well non friction, but they wear out in a few years and are not serviceable. My other bikes have old Suntour power ratchet levers - Rivendel sells new copies of these - that last much longer and are serviceable. These are levers designed for downtube shifting which I have mounted on Shimano barcon mounts - the levers wore out, but the mounts didn't ;-} - so they stick out more and that may be a problem for some people. I have a long waist and short legs, so it isn't for me.
