I have and they are very, very different.

I haven't been able to take Shimano shifters apart non destructively.
When I did take them apart I found a sealed, non adjustable, friction
unit that seems to use layers of different metal to create the
friction. There is no way service this unit, and, as far as I can
tell, no way to buy one. That makes sense since you have to destroy
the shifter to get to it!

The Suntour and Rivendell shifters I have, have a friction unit that
uses two pieces of leather to generate the friction and these pieces
are easily replaceable. Leather is easy to find and cut, so the pieces
are trivial to replace. The friction is very adjustable. I expect
those shifters to outlast me.
