My worst touring bike still got the job done. I took my first multi-day tour when I was 18 years old, in 1972. I rode a single-speed bike with coaster brake, cheap plastic saddle, rubber pedals, and wide handlebars. It had no racks, so I carried what I needed in a canvas backpack. By the standards I use today, almost eveything was wrong. But that rig took me from Norfolk, Virginia, to Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, in three and a half days, without mishap. And it gave me the longest day's ride I've ever made -- 126 miles. I do recall walking up a few hills. George Garber Lexington, Kentucky, USA
