Hey,
     I don't know about the rebuildability (how's that for a word!) of bar end 
shifters but I have had a set of Shimano Dura-Ace bar-end shifters on my 
recumbent trike for over 9 years.  Being an old fart and over weight I tend to 
shift around the cogs an awful lot and I have had no problems with the 
shifters except for the plastic covers sliding off the levers ... fixed that one 
with a touch of heat-shrink.  Of course this is just one man's experience and 
as always YMMV.
