Durability - Worst Touring bike

I sympathise a bit with your rant about durability of modern cycling stuff.
Much of it is aimed at Lance Armstrong wannabees who have well endowed
credit cards that let them have a shop do replacements each season.

 

At the same time, I have a ten year old RANS V2 recumbent with over 10,000
miles on it and am still using the original chain, cassette, and chain rings
(except for the granny gear, which I dropped from a 30 to a 24 for
hill-climbing).  And I am a very big guy who can put a lot of strain on the
3 x 9 drivetrain.

 

I keep the chain well lubed with Pro-Link and clean it once in a while.
Other than that, no special maintenance.  What sort of chain lube do you
use?  Maybe lube is part of the problem?  Seems like you are getting
ridiculously low mileage out of your drivetrain.  Ride much in sand dunes?
Or other gritty conditions?
