Jobst Brandt's ideas about chain lubrication have served me well.
While I rarely take a chain off to clean it, I will go for an extended
ride in the rain from time to time.  After that it gets some oil
(whatever I have on hand).  Other than that, I don't apply lube unless
it starts making noise.  My chains certainly last more than 1000
miles.
