Checking the valve clearances would seem to be a sensible and simple check 
at this point.

Presumably the compression test *was* done with the throttle wide open? 
(Just checking because it *is* important here)

And that the idle air screws had been checked to see that they were backed 
off enough

And that the process of balancing had got sufficiently far that there was 
no chance of them being waaaay off
