K series starter problems....now it's my turn.

Well, it's taken nearly 4 years, but I'm now having starter problems on my
1.6K.

I got the starter off over the weekend, and from the outside it looks OK. I
was expecting to see the blob of solder had disappeared, but it all looks fine.

Symptoms are that when it's hot, I just get a click from a relay in the MFU
thing. No sound whatsoever from the solenoid, although something somewhere
is taking a lot of current when I try, as the fuel pump sounds like it
stops when I press the start button, and I've also blown a couple of ECU fuses.

Rocking the car with it in gear seems to have no effect.

When the car cools down, it seems to start working again.

Any ideas on which failure mode this could be? Could this be a wiring
problem (fixable with Mick's fix)? It all looked OK from what I could see.
Do I recall hearing something about the solenoid sticking as the shaft gets
warm, or something? Tapping it with a hammer didn't help, but perhaps not
hard enough.

Is shorting out the big 12V supply to the little wire on the solenoid a
valid/safe way to try and get around problems like this?

Thanks,

Adam.
