At present no. The brightness is set conservatively so as not to be overly
bright when it's dark. At daytime it's easy to read anyway.

But I guess it could be done. Steve W, would the PWM output + a transistor
(would need to handle up to around 150mA) do the job, or doesn't the LED
backlight like to be turned on/off like this?

Tor,

Is the brightness of the backlighting variable?, would be useful especially
in such (relatively) large panel.

The LCD screen is backlit. The surrounding text is not. The indented(??)
text would be easy to backlight (water and oil temp on the left side,
battery and inlet temp on the right), but the upper and lower text would be
harder. In short the LCD display would then have to be moved further back,
which I don't like the sound of. The other option is some sort of front
light ala normal gauges.

Not sure if it's worth the trouble. If you've used the display in daylight a
short while you are perfectly aware of where the information is located.
Thoughts on this?

You are quite right. In the option menu, the user sets all the trigger
points. In addition to the warning and alarm lights, the corresponding
section on the screen will flash/blink. Once a second for warning, and twice
for alarm.
