>?????? Under NORMAL working - on tick-over. assuming the iacv will be open >(pulled in) so air bypasses the butterfly (how much should it be open? if it's >a stepper motor it must therefore give variable openings & therefore more air >intake & therefore more revs)?????? Once warmed up it will not be open very much, with my current setup the IACV is opened to 90% for starting in the sort of temperatures we have at the moment, but closed to 4% when warm. >So? can I start the engine without the iacv screwed on the plenum & without it >wired up - then connect it up and watch it move out & pull the connector off >(or does it move out too quickly to pull the wires off before it drops out)?? You can experiment by keeping your thumb over the end to stop it winding out too far, you don't need to start the engine as the IACV is initialised when the ignition is switched on. It is first driven out to the end stop to find the 0% position (this is when you need to stop to going too far) and then wound back to the starting opening, I'm not sure what this is for the MEMS but is configurable on the Emerald. >I agree I've probably listened to some incorrect advice & bu@@ered the iacv. & >will need to replace it, but if they don't usually go wrong (or do they) then >I'm back to square one. (and why only when I've got it hot)? They do fail, but tend to not work at all rather than give eratic settings. It wouldn't hurt to temporarily try a known good one if you know anyone else locally with a K-series. >Or could it be the MEMS not sending a signal correctly?? - can this be checked >(no flying lead/s to connect to) Unlikely to be the MEMS. >What's involved in swapping to Emerald?? as per advice from a Ne7ener Guru >(don't start arguing)!!! Assuming there is a map available for your configuration then it can be just plug and play. Few people seem to use the IACV with the Emerald set up so this may not be configured as well as it might be, but it would only be a matter of fine tuning which will be a lot easier with the logging software that is now imminent. >Do I need a laptop to program Emerald or what? -obviously I'd need to know to >what settings & knowing me I'd probably 'over adjust' something!!! >Or does it just get set up on installation and leave it at that? If you want to play then you need a laptop, but if it has a good map to start with then there should be no reason to touch it. >What else is involved? >What else is needed? >Obviously I'd not DIY it!!! or could I??? >Does it give an extra 10 bhp as claimed? It can certainly release more torque and power but to get the best for your particular engine you would need a mapping session. This may be the way to go anyway if you are unsure of your own abilities, as the installation could be done at the same time.
