I got the impression that Tor had a bit more budget to spare than an old
Cavalier...

I would suggest something like a 2-3 year old diesel Mondeo or Focus, or if
you want the prestige (!?) a similar age Passat/Golf TDI.  Reasonably nippy,
practical and reliable.  People who know that you are keen on cars/driving
might think oddly of you but, lets face it, you've got the 7 and its all
about 'tools for the job'.

indeed they are.  I had one from 100 to 130k and another from 40 to 60k.

total problems were a new pair of front disks on the former and a seized
rear drum on the latter after it was left for a few months outside.
