Why is gender balance a big deal to the Tucson Tango Festival?

Tucson Tango Festival gender balance was 50-50 on opening day 2009 and
has been real close to that ever since! Gender balance was our goal and
it works. Quite frequently at festivals I look around the room and I see
too many women with sad faces. I have seen women sitting for hours
waiting for a cabeceo that never comes - this is after buying a festival
pass, a plane ticket and paying for a hotel. Add to that the
psychological stress and anxiety of wondering "Why am I not getting
dances!?" and you can have a very sad person indeed. Gender balance
works because we make it a priority. This year I will cut off either
gender when the registration is out by any more than 45-55.

We all know that tango is a tough on the soul dance at times - perhaps a
part of the allure is the toughening and interpersonal growth it can
bring, but there is a limit. It takes a while to "break in" when you are
an up and coming tango dancer. A large percentage of dancers at
festivals have been dancing for 5+ years and with that much experience
it is easier to get dances since you know more people and of course
eventually you become quite proficient at the dance. It takes a while to
get seen and to be known in tango and at festivals there are a lot of
people in the room so of course a good portion of the dances go to those
you haven't seen for a while, consequently new people can easily get
passed over or not get noticed. Then they get sad and then they feel
like they wasted their money and their time. This is why gender balance
is so important!

We know you spent good money to come to our festival here in Tucson,
that and your emotional well-being is why gender balance is so important

are at 48-52 men to women - so we need some men, so I am making this

We are offering a 2 for 1 special to help ensure gender balance and to
help save your precious tango budget. Grab a friend (hopefully a
lead/follow blend, though not mandatory) and register between October 21
and 23 to get the special! You dance and study tango regularly and you
have friends that dance tango, so grab a friend and register together!
Go to a local class or a milonga this week and ask some one to join you!
If after you have exhausted all your resources if you are still unable
to connect with another dancer please contact us and we will be happy to
assist.

must be received in mail no later than October 24th to receive the 2 for
