Blog by Rusty Cline:
It's the Music that Makes Tango!
That's Why We Call it "Argentine Tango"
Music is key to this dance we call Argentine tango - or - tango for
short. I firmly believe that the golden era music drives the growth in
tango; growth in numbers as well as growth in dancing maturity.

I have been organizing tango events in Tucson for a long time. I guess
since I was having so much fun dancing tango I just couldn't help
but share that joy with others. I wanted everyone to find the same joy I
had found. Since then thanks my partner Joanne and all local teachers
and organizers, our Tucson Tango community has grown both in numbers and
in the quality of its tango dancing

Everyone with successful milongas agrees that they key ingredient for
community growth and maturity is quality, danceable solid gold tango in
the TTVTTM format
<http://tucsontangofallfest.com/jay-abling-teaches-dj-classes/program/>
. Don't get me wrong its fun to goof around to alternative music;
that is why we have an alternative milonga at our festival. Still, if
you want a tango community to mature in their dancing consistent and
quality tango musical tanda arrangements are imperative.

There is a formula to tango music
<http://tucsontangofallfest.com/jay-abling-teaches-dj-classes/program/>
and the tandas built for milongas. It takes some exposure, study and
time spent with the music to understand it. This is why I invite
renowned and respected DJs to teach DJ and tango music appreciation
classes at our festivals. This September join accomplished pianist,
dancer, teacher, DJ and tangophile: Jay Abling
<http://tucsontangofallfest.com/jay-abling-teaches-dj-classes/program/>
as he offers his view, experience and valuable insights for aspiring
DJs, milonga organizers and music aficionados in the Music/DJ classes he
will bepresenting at the Tucson Tango Fall Fest
<http://tucsontangofallfest.com/jay-abling-teaches-dj-classes/program/>
.

Anyone looking at my track record of organizing tango knows I support
and love live music, I am organizing some live music for the Tucson
Tango Fall Fest as I write this. Living orchestras might well resurge
and when they do I will be the first to celebrate and organize concerts
and shows to help.

Want a higher level of dance at your local milongas? Is your local tango
community in need of maturation in its dancing? Would you like to see
more quality tango in your city? Ever think of spreading the joys and
love for tango at home?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might think about
becoming a DJ, organizer or instructor! The Tucson Tango festivals will
help you learn and develop the skills to grow in your dance, music
awareness and community building while having fun and meeting your tango
goals. BTW: the DJ classes are extras that are not included in full
festival pass!

The Tucson Tango Festivals are all about the love for everything Tango
Argentino!

Love & Light,
Rusty

travel to Argentina a few times a year to continue their tango education
with maestros. They've taught and performed in several festivals and
milongas such as El Congreso in Toronto, Valentango in Portland, Tango

Diego Blanco and Ana Padron
  [Diego Blanco and Ana Pedron]
ttachment/diego-ana/> Award-winning Argentine Tango dancers Diego Blanco
and Ana Padron are one of the top performing young couples in the world
today. Their tango style is energetic, rhythmical, and innovative, and
through their fluid moves they fuse nuevo tango with the close embrace
look of traditional tango. They co- founded their dance company, Tango
for All, to bring this electrifying tango to audiences in America and
throughout the world.

Diego and Ana command a wide range of dance disciplines from which they
tap inspiration for their movement. In addition to Argentine Tango,
these include Classical Ballet, Jazz, African, and Jose Limon, Martha
Graham, and Jennifer Muller techniques. They have honed these techniques
and skills since their paths first crossed at the New World School of
the Arts in Miami, Florida, culminating in Bachelor in Fine Arts degrees
from the University of Florida, from which they both graduated with
Honors.

Diego and Ana have radiated their love of tango and brought audiences to
their feet in applause over many years in many nations: they have toured
throughout the United States, the Caribbean, South America, Europe and
Asia. They have brought tango to numerous off-Broadway shows, and danced
and choreographed for an independent film. Outside of the tango realm,
they have choreographed and danced for legendary modern dance companies
that include Jennifer Muller and Martha Graham.

Diego and Ana now teach tango workshops and private lessons that involve
a holistic understanding of movement and an increased awareness of the
body as the bases for musicality and creativity.

since she first fell in love with it as a college student in South

DJs

Jay Abling
  [DJ Jay Abling]

ttachment/jay/>

Jay loves to DJ and his tandas have been known to melt butter in
refrigerators three states away! J Abling believes that a milonga is a
"party where tango is danced". Whenever he DJs, he intends to
keep a good party going with select choice of music to inspire both
lovers of traditional and alternative music. When not teaching or DJing,
he is constantly organizing and listening to his music or looking for
more music to add to his extensive collection. He has learned to dj from
some of the best DJs in the country including Jaimes Friedgen, Alex
Krebs, Dan Boccia, Shorey Myers and Vijay. He has DJd at festivals and
regular milongas in Portland, Seattle, Houston, New York, San Francisco,
San Diego, Los Angeles, Maui and Ashland, OR.

Paul Akmajian

ttachment/akmajian/>

Paul Akmajian (Albuquerque, NM) has been dancing tango for over 10 years
and teaching for the last five. He has been a DJ for most of his tango
life and in the last 3 years he has DJ'd in Seattle, Phoenix,
Tucson, as well as on a regular basis in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
Recently, he was a DJ for the Denver > Albuquerque Labor Day weekend
Tango Festival. He is excited to return to his hometown of Tucson to DJ
for the Tucson Tango Festival.

Kenny Bell
  [DJ KBell]
ttachment/dj-kbell-2/>

Shortly after starting tango, Kenny found himself not only consumed with
the dance, but he had also fallen into a deep obsession with the music.
Since then, he has spent countless hours not only listening to these
golden age classics, but studying them. He focuses not only on orchestra
leaders, but also on singers and time periods, listening to the subtle
differences of eras, styles, and instrumentals, finding out what makes
each orchestra unique and what unifies them, as well as what makes a
good dance song and what doesn't. He uses a very systematic
structure and method of organizing the music to ensure a harmonious
relationship between songs and tandas through the night, and evenly
distributing energy for gentle and thoughtful transitions between
tandas. In his own words, "My goal as a DJ is simple: Play music for
the people, and keep them dancing. As a DJ, I fully understand the
creative power we have over the atmosphere of the social events, and in
essence the attendees are at our mercy. With this in mind, I work
diligently to keep the people energized, inspired, and when it comes
time leave, satisfied."

"Just like the dance of Argentine tango, there is no true end to
studying the music. With tens of thousands of recordings, there is
always something new to learn and discover. It is my mission to continue
studying the music, improving my methods to become both a better dancer
and DJ, and to continue to serve people with the best nights of music I
can conjure."

Varo Biagi
  [Dj Varo Biagi]
ttachment/dj-varo-2/>

As an avid dancer himself, Varo has a deep appreciation for tango music
as a crucial part of the overall milonga experience for each dancer. As
a DJ, Varo strives to create a musical atmosphere that inspires dancers
and connects with them on the emotional level. While DJ-ing, Varo is
always connected to the dancers-either by observing the energy and the
interactions of the dancefloor, or dancing in the middle of it. In
addition to selecting good tango songs, Varo pays detailed attention to
the structure of the playlist.

Varo comprises the tandas and the relationship of tandas to each other
in a way to establish a harmonious flow of the energy, and to develop
emotional-energetic contrasts with a tasteful climax and rise that
resonate within each dancer.

Varo regularly DJ's at milongas in Los Angeles and Southern
Calfornia. He has DJ'd along with Otros Aires and Narcotango and is
invited to DJ tango at festivals all over the US.
Joanne Canalli
  [DJ Jo Canalli]
ttachment/canalli-dj/>

Jo's DJ philosophy is a product of her personal Tango journey as a
follower and, recently, a leader. Although her beginnings came from
Alternative/Nuevo Jo has evolved over time to develop a deep passion and
love for the traditional Argentine Tango music specifically, the Golden
Age era. She prepares 100% traditional tandas concentrating on fully
danceable music with a mix of the playful, the romantic, the high
energy, the sweet and melodic, with maybe a touch of drama. Her goal is
for the dancers to leave the milonga with a happy heart, a satisfied
craving and an eagerness for more.

Vincent Wong
  [Vincent Wong]
ttachment/smith2012_dj_vincent/> Vincent Wong is a Tango DJ in Los
Angeles, California. He deejays regularly around the city include
Practica-Longa Libertad, Milonga El Floridita in Hollywood, Milonga
Sonata in Arcadia, Pasadena Caltech All-Night Milonga, DIVO Milonga in
Santa Monica, Milonga Grand Casino Cafe in Culver City, Milonga LAX, and
the 1st Los Angeles Tango Marathon "L.A.Tangothon 2012?. From
collecting vintage audio for critical listening in a wide variety of
music, Vincent found his passion for Tango in Los Angeles 2007. As an
active Tango dancer himself, he understands the music is the single most
important element of a good milonga. Every song he plays in a milonga is
a greatest hit. The objective is keeping most everyone dancing or enjoy
listening even when they were sitting.
