I was just reading an article in a Hawkworks magazine from like '94
covering exactly that.  The author was testing reusable K&N and UNI
Pod type filters (oiled cotton or foam) because the company he was
working for was spending $30,000 / MONTH on air filters.  Big company,
big equipment, dusty conditions, etc.

The conclusion he came to was that paper works the best, if you care
about filtering.  Most of his machines had quad air filters, two runs
of two filters in series.  In one test he replaced one outer filter
with a foam or cotton one, leaving both inner and the other outer
filters as paper.  The inner one on the cotton/foam side (I can't
remember which one that test used) was clogged with dust in a matter
of hours.

The overall conclusion was that the K&N/ UNI foam filters do *not*
filter as well as the paper ones.

Now, this was a fleet of trucks, construction equipment and cars, not
motorcycles driven on the track, and it was 12 years ago, so the
technology might have changed.  Your mileage may vary.
