Hmmm... I thought of making a set too, considering the plastic ones
cost $40+ bucks, but never thought of such a simple design! I ended
up just buying the plastic ones for fear of being crushed under a crappy
wooden DIY set, but I can see that the "stacked 2x10s" design is pretty
fail proof. I can see how a DIYer with a router might have fun with those
2x10 edges!

Speaking of simplicity, I was surfing around on the topic of those engine
drain valves, and came across a great tip for oil filter removal, which I'm
sure you die hard car guys already know... Cut the top off a 2 litre soda
bottle, then after loosening the oil filter, slip the bottle over the filter
and
continue to remove it (the bottle is made of plastic soft enough to
squeeze).
The filter and massive oil hemorrage will be contained within the bottle.
Man,
such a simple tip would have saved me many oily forearms in the past!

And I picked up one of those "nice" oil drain pants that have a "lid" shaped
like a big funnel (someone linked to it on this thread), which you can just
sit
your oil filter on to drain it of oil before tossing it. Sort of links in
with my
previous topic of "oil filter recycling". I think some eggcrate laid over
the top
of a standard open oil catcher pan would work well too. (eggcrate = the
plastic grid that is often used over fluourescent light fisxtures). (ie;
poke the
filter with a nail, then sit it on the eggcrate to drain into the pan and
toss the
drained filter it the next morning).
