Using the latest Garmin Map Source version 6.9.1 here's how I get auto routing.

On the computer using Map Source set start and finish location and
any waypoints you want along the way.
Right click on the routes tap and select "maps around route"
Save you file then upload maps, waypoints and routes to the GPS.

On the GPS go to the main menu
Go to the Routes menu
Select you route by highlighting and press enter button
Select Navigate on this screen and push enter again
GPS will calculate the route and will give you auto-routing.
It will tell you when to turn prior to the corners and provides street names
If you want to see road detail zoom in until you have 800 ft resolution.

good luck
