NSVC Electronics help

Cheap Chinese MP3  player,  Nex  ia+  by Frontier Labs. Great sound and uses Compact
Flash cards, I was able to get some 256 meg cards cheap on Ebay.
The  problem  is  it  will  not  power  up  unless you insert fresh AA
batteries.  Play  it  for a few minutes or half a day then turn it off
for  a  few  minutes and will not turn back on again unless you remove
the batteries for several seconds and re-insert.

It connects to a PC via a USB cable and is advertised as drawing power
from the PC while connected. I have fooled with their support and they
are not very supportive. They DID send me a "special" firnware version
that  did  not  help.  I  have  flashed  all  of  the various firmwate
versions and none had any effect on the problem.

Interestingly enough,
each  newer firmware version seems to have new and worse bugs than the
previous  one  although  the only specific claim is improved compatibility with
various  CF brands. I have not really tested this issue.

I  speculate  that the problem is related to a design feature intended
to  shut  the  player  off  when low battery voltage is detected. This
feature  seems  to be common in digital devices, and I assume it is to
protect  the eprom data. (Not sure if I am correct in terminology here
but  I  am  referring  to  the  capacity  of a chip to store data when
powered down)

Anyway  I suspect that this voltage sensing feature is malfunctioning.
Is this a firmware function or is it a hardware function? Any thoughts
on how to test, fix or engineer a work around?
