I moved here many years ago because I wanted to be a beatnik. --------------------------- Funny thing: Wikipedia has a long and generally accurate description of the Beat Generation (Beatniks), but for some strange reason claims that Herb Caen (Saint Herb, if you're a San Franciscan) claimed there were Communist Party connections with the Beatniks. I came to SF in '63 and read Herb every day. Like most San Franciscans. Here's what the Wikipedia article says: Despite the attempts of several mainstream authors such as Caen to imply a connection with communism, there was no direct connection between the Beatnik philosophy (as expressed by the leading authors of this literary movement) and the philosophy of the Communist movement, other than the antipathy that both philosophies shared towards materialism and capitalism. ----------------- Funny. I remember specifically that Herb Caen coined the name. And wrote about the beatniks many times in his daily columns. Communist connections? Amazing. Proof once again that anyone can be an authority, never mind the facts.
