I agree it's unfounded.

If you're in an accident so severe that the force transferred by the slider somehow damages the engine, then that accident is almost certainly going to make your bike a writeoff regardless.

Pretty much the worst you'll see with sliders is the long bolt gets bent and you have to replace it.
