My '01 with 35k miles on it also has not needed an adjustment yet.  You
can definitely do the valve clearance inspection yourself, it's not
difficult if you have the service manual and can follow simple directions.
Take special care when applying the sealer to the cam cover gasket, don't
slather it everywhere, but only in the exact areas indicated in the manual
and don't overdo it.
