Just kidding Bob ;) The SV isn't really ideal on dirt roads and soft sand in my experience, but that might just be due to my lack of recent dirt bike experience and the tires I have on it. Maybe with some adventure touring tires it would be a lot better. Try riding it on some dirt and gravel roads around here and see what you think.
