Actually, I have a commercially made battery pack that contains four  
standard Duracell 2500 Mah NiMH rechargables.

There is not much room lengthwise. I fabricated a replacement  battery
pack from 2300 mAh rechargeables and they barely fit. Batterys used  in
battery pack are shorter than regular AA  sticks.
