Dave, I think you hit the nail on the head in your first statement. 
As an electronic maintenenace instructor, I have always enjoyed it 
when anyone asks a question, no matter how trivial. But it is always 
annoying when someone refuses to anknowledge your information or 
twists the content to ridiculous lengths in an attempt to sound 
knowlegable themselves (if the were so sure of the answer or that you 
are wrong, then why did they ask, except in a pathetic attempt to 
show off?)

"Dan" seems to lack more than a basic knowledge of electrical know-
how, which is no problem in itself, since many people new to the 
radio hobby do - I've taught and helped dozens, with much joy. But he 
also seems to lack a basic common sense that should go with the 
learning that allows one to interpret the answers he seeks into 
useful knowledge - for instance Dan, my 10 year old son read your 
question about "what do you do (about having the R2 hooked to the 
charger) when the batteries are warm indicating they are fully 
charged?" and quipped "well, unhook your radio and put the charged 
batteries in your scanner....Duh!!" which was a bit amusing, if not 
telling. 

I think the second worse thing someone can do is to be-little someone 
who seeks knowledge. So I won't laugh at the satellite dish question, 
just explain (for a last reply to Dan) that while the dish will give 
some small reflective gain if you place the R2 at the dish'd focal 
point, the idea is definitely in the "why bother" category when you'd 
do much better with a small hi-gain omni, let alone a beam antenna 
such as a Log Period array.

So what's the worst thing you can do? Dan has that down pat, 
belittling and berating the answers of those he is seeking knowledge 
from - a good method for staying on the road to ignorance. It is one 
thing to say you don't understand an answer to a question. It is rude 
and tactless to ask a question and then call the answer stupid - even 
by inferrance.
