ticking R2, aircraft band reception

Last night, my wife returned from a conference. I drove to the airport a bit early, and sat at the end of the runway listening to tower frequency on my R2. It was very quiet in the car between airplanes, and I noticed a soft ticking sound. It turned out to be my R2. It seems that when the radio is in power-saving mode, it produces a small noise every time the radio "wakes up" and goes back to sleep again. I don't know if the noise leaks into the speaker or comes from the DC-DC converter. It's very quiet, so you need a quiet environment and to hold the R2 almost right up to your ear (so have the volume turned down in case a signal appears suddenly!). If I deliberately unsquelch the radio with the button and let it squelch again, the radio will be quiet for 5 seconds while it is on continuously. Then I hear about 30 seconds of fast ticking while power saver checks several times a second. Then it drops back to slow ticking as the wakeup rate becomes less than once a second. Another interesting thing: Sometimes I use a Yaesu FT-50 amateur transceiver to listen to aircraft frequencies. It has the advantage over the R2 of a full number keypad, so it's easier to select an arbitrary frequency with the FT-50. However, I discovered that if I'm sitting in the parking lot right next to the control tower at a local airport, the FT-50 overloads and the audio almost vanishes. I have to remove the antenna to reduce the signal strength to get useful reception from the FT-50. In the same conditions, the R2 works fine, even without using the built-in attenuator.
