using xp and a usb port

old pc crashed. now have a pc without a serial port.windows xp, Got a usb to serial converted with software. Two problems 1st. download the r2 butel software, use my purchased name & key. Every time I open the program says demo mode...why?? 2nd. Cannot upload from radio, but I suppose thats because its in demo.. so what port 1-4 is a usb port??? help!!!!!!!!!!!
