I don't see how else this could work unless a radio contains two complete 
receivers.

First, it needs DC, not AC.  Connecting AC might well create the need to buy 
a new R2.

Second, most DC-output "wall wart" power supplies have a lot of ripple in 
their output voltage under load.  Since the R2's audio amplifier is powered 
directly from the battery voltage, there will be 120 Hz hum in the output if 
you use one of these supplies.  However, the R2 will probably continue to 
work.  Most of the rest of its circuitry is powered by a DC-DC converter 
followed by voltage regulators, so most circuitry will get constant supply 
voltage.

Third, a toroid is useful for attenuating RF-frequency AC on power wires, 
but it's not going to do anything at all for 120 Hz hum.  To get hum-free 
operation from wall power, use a wall wart with a regulated output voltage.
