AUTO is nothing else than squelchlevel set at 1/2 and is fine most of the time. In the car it gets a bit too noisy due to all the RF disturbances, and I usually run the squelch at 1 or 2.

Unless you have some special reason to do otherwise, leave it on auto. 
I have found very few occasions where anything else is required.
