Icom 24-AT

In order to avoid the extra expense of purchasing additional 
transceivers which I would need to enable access to radio services 
such as FRS, GMRS, MURS, as well potential business frequencies 
which I would license within the VHF and UHF bands, I followed some 
online advice and had my Icom 24-AT modified to potentially transmit 
within these frequency ranges--should the need eventuate.

Although I realize that the "vintage" 24-AT has limited capabilites 
to a certain extent as compared to other more recent transceivers, I 
am told it ought to prove its worth, regardless.

Perhaps other users who have made this same modification to the Icom 
24-AT would kindly share some tips and information; dos and don'ts, 
etc., as these would be very much appreciated.

Although I am still tinkering with the possibilites this handy tool 
may provide, I have already discovered one potentially problematic 
issue, which is that when attempting to key in an OFFSET FREQUENCY 
to access a repeater, there seem to be only a limited number of 
offset frequency settings ("OW" onscreen), settings such 
as .00; .0250; .05; 0750, etc.

This begs the question as to whether more flexible offset 
frequencies can be programmed as input, say, for example, .66 or(660 
kHz) As it stands, the nearest I can come to it is offset .65 which 
is immidiately followed by .6750; .70, etc. No altering of the 
tuning steps--5, 10, 12.5, etc.--makes any difference, of course.

I am aware of other transceivers manufactured by Icom, etc. which do 
indeed have a more flexible choice of offset frequencies, but I 
logically assume that since the 24-AT was built to offer the most 
popular standard of the .60 offset setting (600 kHz)--plus or minus--
depending on the amateur repeater in question--could it be possible 
to enable anything different--perhaps via some simply keyboard 
trickery.

Otherwise, if not, I assume another trip to the service shop will be 
required. Or will that be a waste of time as well? 

Anyone who is very familiar with the Icom 24-AT and who can make 
some helpful suggestions in this regard, is most welcome to comment.
