Phil,
Though the price may be somewhat above $100, depending
on the dealer, I recommend the MFJ 886 counter. I reviewed one
in Feb. 2002 Monitoring Times and found it very sensitive and well
built.

In an open field, the MFJ886 we tested read a 146 MHz walki-talkie signal
at 261 ft., and a 446 MHz walkie talkie at 143 ft. It found plenty
of signals while connected to a 19 inch magnetic mount whip atop
the car while we drove around the area.
The MFJ886 is actually made my Aceco, and you can find Aceco models with
more features sold by Hamtronics:

A cordless phone signal is so weak that I doubt you would
be able to capture it with a frequency counter at 100 ft.
