If you don't need maximum battery life, turn off power save to prevent
clipped transmissions. As long as one set of charged batteries will get you
through the day's events in normal mode, you don't need power save mode.
The NiCd batteries included with my R2 were rated at 700 mAh, enough for 7
hours of normal mode and double that in battery save if the channel is
usually quiet. But if you switch to NiMH batteries instead, almost anything
you can buy is at least 1600 mAh these days. With 16 hours of operation in
normal mode, you may find battery save mode is pointless.
You can use the charger included with the R2 to charge the higher-capacity
NiMH cells, but the charge time will be something like 16 hours for 2 cells.
A fast charger is much better.
