New to this

Hello and bare with me please.  I am new to this group and have what 
most of you will consider a very amature question.  A have the BC245xlt 
and I used to use it a lot.  A few years ago I heard the police etc. 
were going on new frequencies making this scanner obsolete.  At that 
time I put the scanner in my junk drawer and just pulled it out 
yesterday.  Is this scanner still usable? If so, what do I need to do 
to get it going (software etc???) What can I expect to pick up with 
this scanner?  Help!
