Hi Mike, I would NOT recommend leaving the terminals of the miniature phone plug bare and exposed.  If you do that, any piece of metal, aluminum foil, or any conductive item dropped or accidentally touching the terminals will short circuit and possibly blow the audio amplifier in the 780.   If you plug something in, I would ensure that the screw-on sleeve is securely on the plug.  Or use a miniature phone plug on a cord that has a female jack on the other end to avoid accidental short circuit.
